I’m Pregnant! Can I still spray tan?

Can-You-Spray-Tan-While-Pregnant-

It’s starting to get colder outside, and your baby bump isn’t likely going to be seeing much sun (and even if it was you should be wearing SPF.) So the big question is can you spray tan while pregnant? This is a question often asked, and it is very important to have a thorough understanding of precautionary measures, and possible contraindications for the safety of the expecting mother. With proper approval, expecting mothers should have no problem spray tanning.

A doctor knows best:  ALWAYS consult their doctor prior to scheduling their spray tan. Technicians can supply you with an ingredient list of the product which will be utilized in the service, this way the doctor can fully understand the product being applied.

Take into consideration, pregnancy can cause many hormonal imbalances which may affect the spray tan. Be sure you are aware this could cause spray tan unevenness, light development, or no development. It is best to avoid rapid solutions while pregnant because of this reason, as the client may not see optimal results. To avoid, a trial spray may be beneficial especially for events.

Follow safety regulations

FDA currently approves and regulates DHA for external use only and does not approve for internal consumption. To comply with FDA regulations, Brushed Artistry offers mucus membrane protection in the form of nose filters, eye protection, disposable panties and bras, and an extraction system.

Are you breastfeeding? DHA and cosmetic bronzer is transferable during development.  Avoid breastfeeding during the development period. Ideally, it is best to wear a bra or bikini top during the sunless service, this way the nipple is not exposed allowing for the infant to ingest.

10 Things nobody tells you about Spray Tanning!

I don’t think we should have to be telling you that you need to wear sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY. ANY darkening of the skin indicates some sun damage has occurred, so it’s smart to make a habit of slathering on the SPF—which makes spray tans an appealing alternative. But how much do you really know about the sunless stuff? We want to spill the secrets you need to know to get a believable bronze—and make it last.

1. Sugar scrubs are BAD NEWS

Cucumber-Mint-Sugar-Scrub-Recipe-009-1

That’s right everyone, those sugar scrubs you love so much are BAD NEWS bears. You’ll definitely want to exfoliate pre-spray tan to get even glow; sloughing off old skin cells creates an even base for the tan to adhere to. But if you don’t choose the right scrub, it may cause your tan to streak. The oils in popular sugar scrubs coat the skin and cause the tan to run right off. Instead, use an exfoliating mitt and skip applying lotion afterward; spray tan formulas stick best to dry skin.

2. Go Alcohol-Free!

selection-of-alcohol-595x240

…on the ingredient list, that is. Alcohol is a common ingredient in many spray tans; the liquid acts as a thinning agent, allowing the tan to flow into the fine mist necessary for the application. Alcohol is actually really damaging to your spray tan, causing a crackling effect of the color and making your skin look crazy-dry. While it’s hard to find a spray tan that’s totally alcohol-free, be sure to check the ingredient list and verify that alcohol’s not the first or second thing mentioned. ALL BRUSHED ARTISTRY SPRAY TANS ARE ALCOHOL-FREE, so stick with us to avoid this issue!

Remember to avoid Alcohol in your aftercare products, and soaps as well.

3. Well Ventilated Salons and Mobile Set Ups are SAFEST

IMG_4509

Since inhaling spray tan product can pose safety concerns, you’ll want to pick your salon and/or mobile spray tan artist strategically. Choose an airy salon with equipment that has a ventilation fan designed to suck away any overspray immediately. Pay attention to the room you’ll be in too (or tent): If there’s spray tan formula on the walls and things just look generally dirty, that’s a sign that the salon or equipment is poorly maintained—and poorly ventilated. Make sure to ask your technician for an LVLP machine (that stands for low volume, low pressure, and it means you’re less likely to get overspray that you could inhale). We are proud to offer this equipment, and tanning environment for all of your spray tan needs.

4. A Spray Tan is NOT a base Tan

tanners.jpg

The concept of getting a “base tan” to prevent sunburn is bogus, to begin with—but you should definitely know that a spray tan has no effect on your body’s melanin, which is what causes your skin to tan naturally. Just because you look tan doesn’t mean you’re not going to burn. Use a lightweight sunscreen to protect your skin and your faux-glow. We recommend using IMAGE Sunscreen since it is safe for your spray tan and does not contain any alcohol or harmful ingredients.

5. STOP Piling on the Body Butter

body.jpg

Some salons may recommend keeping the skin highly moisturized to prolong the length of your spray tan, but that’s not the best advice since the moisture in heavy lotions and body butter will work away at your glow, causing it to fade faster. Use a lightweight lotion instead and only moisturizing when absolutely necessary. We love our After Glow Moisturizer since you apply it in the shower, creating a different moisturizing effect on the skin.

6. You CANNOT maintain a Spray Tan

1825426.jpg

It would be great if you could keep up your spray tan the way you do your eyebrows or roots, but unfortunately, faux tans don’t work that way. If you spray a new tan on top of an old tan, it will look patchy—darker in areas where the old tan remains, and lighter in areas where it’s already worn off. Enjoy your tan for about one and a half weeks, then removing it and starting fresh. Speaking of which…

7. THERE IS A FIX FOR A BAD TAN and a way to get old ones off so you can start off FRESH!

content-panel-desktop

If the worst happens and you look more like an Oompa Loompa than a bronzed goddess, don’t worry: At-home removal is super-easy. Water breaks down the ingredients in your spray tan and loosens it from the skin, so run a warm bath with a little shower gel mixed in, along with lemon juice and 4-5 tablets of Polident (YES the Denture Cleaner.) Soak in it for at least a half an hour, then exfoliate with a loofah or mitt. The tan will rinse away with the water, leaving you with a clean slate.

8. Cell Turnover affects the life of your tan

Everybody’s tan lasts a slightly different length of time, and it usually has nothing to do with the product. The speed at which your cells turn over has a huge effect on how long your tan will last; the younger you are, the faster your cells turn over, which causes your tan to fade more quickly. The bad news: There’s nothing you can do about the speed at which your cells regenerate. The good news: Keeping the amount of moisture your skin is exposed to a minimum can help prolong the life of your tan.

9. Chlorine and Hot Tubs are NOT your friends when you have a Spray Tan

maui-tanning-texas

While taking a quick dip in the pool won’t ruin your tan, spending hours on-end in chlorinated water will. Chlorine, which is a kind of bleach, will take the tan right off your skin. As such, Brushed Artistry recommends limiting your swim time after you’ve gotten a spray tan and patting dry right when you get out of the water. Hot Tubs are even worse because they contain Chlorine AND hot water causing your tan to fade faster than ever.

10. Shave at least 24 hours before, waxing is 48 hours before!

It may seem like common sense to shave before a spray tan, but shaving immediately prior to your appointment can cause the product to irritate your skin. Shaving is a mild exfoliant that exposes new skin cells, which are extra sensitive. DHA (the pigment in spray tan) reacts with those sensitive cells and can cause some serious redness and discomfort. There should be a 24-hour window between shaving and your appointment, and a 48-hour window between waxing.

Personally, I will ALWAYS choose to wax over shaving, because when waxing you are starting with an extremely clean canvas. If you choose to wax be sure to do so at least 48 hours before your appointment to give your pores enough time to close. ( This includes brow waxing!)

For all of your waxing, and brow needs Brows by Wink is INCREDIBLE, and conveniently located next to our Windermere Studio.

Fortunately, people are choosing sprays overlaying in tanning beds these days, the smart ones are anyways! A large percentage of Tanning Beds give off significant amounts of UVA, which has been proven to increase the risks of skin cancer. UVB rays have slightly more energy than UVA rays. They can harm the cells’ DNA directly and are the main rays that cause sunburns. These rays y are what cause the most skin cancers. Pick the safe alternative to a healthy glow, and book your Brushed Artistry spray tan today!

New Year, New Tan Routine

spray-tan-vs-sun-tan-is-tanning-safe-at-all

I feel like this is the perfect time to talk about the ever so dangerous topic of Skin Cancer. An estimated 9,940 people died of melanoma in 2015. That is a pretty big number. As we know many of these cases could not have been avoided, due to lack of knowledge and studies about the subject. Although there could have been a few in there that could have been avoided, we will never know as it is just a statistic. Science has proven that overexposure to UV rays produces skin cancer in your cells. This does not mean you have to hide under an umbrella in a hazmat suit walking around all day outside. All this means is that you should be aware of the weather, and the activities that you are participating in. I ALWAYS wear sunscreen on my face. Every day, because this woman does NOT want wrinkles. That’s the other terrible thing about baking in the sun… the wrinkles.

Another important thing that EVERYONE needs to do, is to be checked regularly by a dermatologist. If you catch the precancerous cells early it will be much easier to treat. So go get tested!

Always remember though, just because you can’t bake in the sun does NOT mean you cannot be tan. I am here for all of your tanning needs, it requires no sweating, no sunburns, and no skin cancer. The answer is Spray Tanning, and I come right to you. The color always looks natural and fades evenly as a normal man would. Call me anytime if you are in Orlando for an Appointment at 321-276-0863, or e-mail me at info@brushedartistry.com if you are interested in purchasing a tan can (a great at home alternative.)

Hope everyone has a nice, and healthy new year!

How to keep your glow this holiday season!

1701

Happy Holidays from Brushed Artistry

Holiday parties, events, and photos are soon approaching. If you are anything like me, I inhaled quite a few extra calories already over this past Thanksgiving weekend. From all the deserts, turkey, stuffing, potatoes, and so many more mouth-watering foods I just could not resist! Now I am right back into the busy holiday season, and just like many of you others out there the gym is the last place I have time to get to. Thankfully, there is a resolution to this problem. It is temporary, and by no means am I saying to drop your workout habits BUT if you get a pinch, and need that extra boost of color (and confidence) not only will a spray tan give you a slimmer appearance, there is also the magic of contouring.

bf728179af21352c7f53fca2e04af62d

To sum up contouring, I can give you the illusion that you went to the gym when well… you really did not. Nobody has to know that though, it will be our little secret 😉

96008bb0953e206a5f76cab432f7ecb4

Be sure to book ahead for any special events you have throughout the month. It is best to get the spray a day or two before the event. We do book up quickly so reserve your spot.

tumblr_nglocnGaUe1t2p2ixo1_500

Also if you are someone who is loving your spray tans, and have a friend that you know would love them as well consider a Brushed Artistry gift certificate. The gift of an at home spray tan is one of the most original, luxurious gifts that they will never expect, but absolutely love. Ask your Spray Tan Artist about these at your next appointment.

To keep a consistent color during these colder months we recommend to book weekly or bi-weekly depending on your skin. Always be sure to exfoliate the old tan off completely before getting a new one. Our Dermasuri product works GREAT for this.

Let one of your errands come to you this Holiday season, and get your Spray Tan at home by the #1 Spray Tanning Company in Central Florida.

Happy Holidays!

Summer is gone, but that doesn’t mean your tan has to be!

ea550ef3d0bd4b8e514fd4bdf3b83393

It’s starting to get cold (unless you live in Florida) so those trips to the beach and pool have most likely trickled out of your schedule. Don’t let yourself get pasty white this year, and book Spray Tans instead! Spray tanning is a SAFE alternative compared to the harmful UV rays of tanning beds. You don’t want to look like a prune when you get older, do you? I did not think so… and neither do I! Make the safe choice, and trade the tanning bed for a Spray Tan. I guarantee you that your future self and your skin will thank you for it!

Now here are some tips to keep your spray tan looking flawless all winter.

Colder weather not only comes with coats, and pants. It also comes with dry skin. When spray tanning during these months you are going to want to keep your skin extra moisturized. Do not only moisturize after you have got sprayed but prep your skin before as well adding extra lotion the days leading up to your spray tan. Be sure that you are using a lotion that contains NO ALCOHOL and NO MINERAL OIL. These ingredients will work against your tan instead of with it, causing it to fade more rapidly, or even possibly fade unevenly. I love using coconut oil as a natural moisturizer, it works GREAT!

Another thing you want to be aware of in the winter is you are most likely not going to want to go as dark as you did during the summer. Not only will this look more natural, but your skin is most likely a lighter tone from not being in the sun. You always want to make sure to choose the right shade for the occasion.

I hope everyone had an amazing summer, but always remember just because the summer is over does not mean your tan has to be 😉

Applying Makeup Properly Without Ruining your Lash Extentions

FullSizeRender(2)

I have been holding off on posting this for quite some time now because honestly, I feel like it needs a video tutorial. I am going to do my best with what I have at the moment though, and try to explain in words how to properly apply makeup while wearing lash extensions. I have heard many people tell me lash extensions do not work for them due to the everyday makeup they use. This is NOT true. You just have to learn different techniques, that way to keep your new lash extensions untouched, and most importantly still on your face. I am going to explain step by step how I apply heavy makeup with extensions, these techniques have kept my extensions flawless, and absolutely stunning. These new techniques may get some getting used to, as you will have to step outside the box but I promise you that your lashes and a lash artist will thank you!

Step 1: Applying Eye Makeup

FullSizeRender(1)

When applying eye makeup the most important advice that I can give you is that you need to avoid touching the actual lashes with any tools that you are using to apply your makeup. I highly recommend using high-quality brushes (only due to the fact that they do not shed, and will not get stray hairs stuck in your lashes) , as these are the easiest to manipulate around the eye area. Also, a magnified mirror helps SO much, it is worth the investment.

  • Primer: When applying your eye shadow primer to your lids, tilt your head backward. Use a synthetic brush to apply the primer all over your lids, keeping your head tilted backward, and using the brush pointing downwards will avoid your lashes. Always be sure to be very gentle around your lash line. You can also use your fingers to apply this product by keeping your head tilted backward, and apply the product gently from your lids to your brow with your eyes closed.
  • Eye shadow:  After applying the primer be sure to set it with a bone, or natural colored shadow to make the blending process easier. Use a fluffy blending brush (example: Sigma E40) and tilt your head backward again, looking up towards the sky. Take your brush, and gently apply the shadow holding your brush in a downward angle away from your lashes blending from your lids to eyebrows. Do the same with the crease color, except to be sure to only keep the color in the crease I would use a pointed crease brush for this application (Example MAC 217). When you get to the lid color we will need to switch the technique a bit. To give a more defined lid you are going to want to tilt your head DOWN slightly, stretch your eyelids, and pull the outside skin of your lid slightly. This will make your lid flatter, and easier to get a defined look without touching your lashes. Using a flat shadow brush (Example: MAC 224) pack your lid color onto your lid with the brush still pointing downwards. Blend as necessary. IMG_4329
  • Eyeliner:  Did you know that when you are rocking your lash extensions you are not able to wear waterproof makeup products? I could hear some of you gasp at the sound of that all the way from across the internet! Thankfully there are many products available to you that are not only safe for your extensions but also help to improve the quality of your lashes. Ask your lash artist about these products at your next appointment. FullSizeRenderAnother trick I like to use (if I am going for a bold wing or a look with thicker liner) is that I will very thinly line my lash line with the Lash Food product, and then use my normal products on top of where I placed the thin line. I know everyone has their favorite eyeliners out there, and don’t think you have to give that up when you get your extensions. I also like to set my eyeliner with shadow, if you do not own any lash safe liner products you can always use the shadow to line your eyes near your lashes instead. Now when applying the eyeliner I like to use the same technique as i use while applying my lid. Tip your head downwards, and stretch out your eye to the side. Keep the product facing downwards, and away from your lashes.
  • Mascara: ALWAYS USE A MASCARA INTENDED TO USE WITH EYELASH EXTENSIONS, NEVER USE ANY OTHER KINDS OF MASCARA AS THEY COULD CAUSE CLUMPING, AND WILL DAMAGE YOUR EXTENSIONS.

Step 2: Foundation and Concealer

  • Foundation and Concealer: When applying your foundation be sure to stay away from your lashes, sometimes we do this step so quickly we are not aware that we may actually be getting makeup on the eyelash extensions them self.  I like to use a beauty blender or a small kabuki brush since they are both very precise.

Step 3: Eyebrows, Contouring, Blush, Bronzer, Highlighter,       Lipstick, and Setting Spray

  • When it comes to the finishing touches on your makeup, these things should not have much effect on your lashes. You can apply these products just as you would with your own natural lashes, as they stay clear of the lash area.
